Recycling project for IG Nachhaltigkeit support lenses

In Germany alone, with almost 13 million pairs of glasses sold each year, around 66 tons of plastic waste (PMMA, acrylic glass, CR39 or polycarbonate) is generated by the transparent support lenses or demo lenses in spectacle frames.

This is distributed over small amounts every day at individual optical companies, up to to large quantities in the grinding workshops of chain stores or industry. Since its founding, opti's IG Nachhaltigkeit has been thinking about how at least part of this amount of plastic can be returned to the recycling cycle. In mid-2022, on the initiative of Matthias Köste, managing partner of pricon and himself an IG Nachhaltigkeit member, a logistics and circulation concept for PMMA was created, which he is presenting today.
