Moving the correction limits of orthokeratology with NightFlex!
One argument that we often hear in our day-to-day business or in daily practice is: Ortho-K is not available for my spectacle powers? Is that true?
In the beginning of orthokeratology, there were a lot of limits for the correction. Myopia was often only corrected till -4.50 dpt, fittiings for hyperopia were impossible. This has changed in the last years. Many more customers can be fitted now with the new OrthoK geometries and enjoy the feeling of freedom in their everyday vision. Last year the company invested in three new maschines at the production site in Prilly on Lake Geneva. SwissLens produces individualised contact lenses in nanometre precision. This step allows the company to dispatch urgent orders on the same day.
For which customer group are NightFlex contact lenses especially recommended?
NightFlex contact lenses can be fitted for a large number of visual defects in every age:
- Children and young people with myopia management
- Myopes and hyperopes who want to enjoy free vision during the day without glasses
- Presbyopes who want to look younger without additional reading glasses
Decide which customer is the right fit for Ortho-K contact lenses and make the correct selection from the NightFlex portfolio. The diagram will give you an overview of the options.
How does the fitting work for the individual visual defects and what needs to be considered?
In principle, a detailed corneal topography with a large measurement area is recommended. You are welcome to send this measurement, including the refraction, to the SwissLens team for the calculation of an optimal Ortho-K contact lens. The Medmont Meriadia Pro is highly recommended for baseline and progression measurements because of its very large measuring area and ease of use. Here you have the option of sending your data directly from the software to SwissLens.
When fitting myopic customers, the central cornea is flattened and a ring-shaped steepening appears in the periphery. If you have high myopia (-5 dpt to -9 dpt), special attention should be taken to the optic zones, as these are smaller in diameter due to the power, which can lead to halos. With the NightFlex High Myopia, you therefore have the option of increasing the size of the optic zones.
The new hyeropia design provides a distribution of the cell fluid to the centre and corrects the plus power up to +3.50 diopters. The centre is steepened and therefore the plus effect is realised.
The existing corneal radiuses and eccentricities are always essential for a correction, as these have a significant effect. The correction of very flat initial corneal radii can only optimised to a limited degree.
The periphertoric design is usually the best choice for corneal astigmatisms, for example if the difference in radius is more than 0.3 mm or the difference in sagittal vertex depth is more than 40 microns with a diameter of 8 mm. This design ensures a balanced pressure balance and leads to optimum centring.

Is Nightflex Relax a certified product for myopia management?
Yes, SwissLens provides all contact lenses in the Relax series as certified products. These are available as soft, RGP and Ortho-K contact lenses for children with progressive myopia.
What makes NightFlex Relax so unique?
A special design is available to fit children and young people, which is different in structure from the classic Ortho-K contact lenses. The reverse zone has a higher addition effect and the optical zone is adapted to the pupil size of the wearer. This means that even low myopia or very small pupils can be optimally corrected and the management of relative hyperopic defocus is possible.
Myopia is corrected in all 3 cases, but myopia management is not always optimal.
Image 1 Myopia management given, but halos possible because ZOC too small for large pupil
Image 2 Optimal ZOC to pupil relation for myopia management
Image 3 no optimal myopia management, as ZOC too large for small pupil
But is OrthoK also right for children?
This question can also be answered with a clear yes. Children and young people can put the contact lenses in together with their parents in the evening and take them off and clean them in the morning in a monitored procedure, which keeps the risk of loss and breakage to a minimum. This means that children have clear vision during the day, whether they are playing sport, reading for a long time at school or during their free time.
Last year, a 9-year-old primary school girl was fitted with NightFlex Relax and has been loving it ever since. The myopia was diagnosed in 2022 during a routine check-up by the ophthalmologist and at that time the values were -1.75 dpt on both sides. One year later, she already had -2.75 dpt in both eyes. As both parents are highly myopic and after measurement with the Myopiamaster and its prognosis, myopia management was urgently recommended. The teenager therefore started wearing NightFlex Relax contact lenses and felt very comfortable right from the start. She was finally able to enjoy her sporting hobbies such as gymnastics and basketball again without having to worry about her glasses or having to put up with visual discomfort. She always talks enthusiastically about her Ortho-K contact lenses at every check-up and when she changed them after a year, the spherical values stayed the same. A successful fitting and a happy girl.
Is presbyopia treatment also possible?

Which materials can you choose from when fitting an OrthoK contact lens?
Two highly gas-permeable materials that do not influence the metabolism of the cornea are available specifically for OrthoK fitting. Both are very unbreakable, stable and comfortable. To avoid possible mixing up, it is always best to make the NightFlex in different colours. All contact lenses will also be engraved with the serial number.
What are the pros of NightFlex contact lenses? Why should you fit NightFlex contact lenses?
To finalise, you can successfully manage refractive defects from +3.50 dpt to -9.00 dpt and even presbyopia.
In myopia management, you rely on a certified contact lens with adaptation to the pupil size in order to optimally use the effect of the hyperopic defocus.
You have a large number of parameters, materials and colours to fit your contact lens perfectly. Our customer service team will be pleased to help you!
You can look at all this in more detail in the Ortho-K handbook from SwissLens, which you can pick up at opti2025 in Hall C4 at Stand 231. Or contact us for an onboarding session free and informal via Teams.
