VAGUES – The New Sunglasses Collection

Fabián M Hofmann Bonengél has earned a reputation for his affinity for Midcentury aesthetics, particularly the design influences from the mid-1950s to the late 1960s. However, his creations are not mere retro references; they integrate classic forms with contemporary trends and cultural narratives. In a previous project, he aptly coined the phrase: “Remember the Future.”

The VAGUES sunglasses collection by BARCELUNETTES evokes an imaginary world of the sophisticated 1950s—a time of Savoir-vivre, renewed optimism, and freedom, reminiscent of Hollywood classics like Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief.

A key design feature is the deeply embossed wave pattern on the inner surfaces of the frame fronts and temples. Unlike milled patterns, this structure is permanently pressed into the material using traditional embossing techniques, creating a distinctive texture and tactile quality. Each frame model requires a custom embossing tool—an intricate and rarely used process that results in unparalleled quality.

All materials and components are exclusively crafted for Barcelunettes. The 12 mm Duotonal™ M49 acetate by Mazzucchelli reveals a unique color gradient within its thickness—an effect that only becomes visible after milling, adding an optical sense of depth. The custom-made temple cores feature a fine, double-density wave pattern, which, when combined with the back structure, creates mesmerizing light reflections. Additionally, prismatic milling on the front further amplifies this effect, projecting shifting wave patterns depending on the viewing angle.

The metal components are just as meticulously designed. The 7-layer barrel hinge, with cylindrical washers and stop screws, ensures smooth, dampened temple movement. Titanium-plated joints and rivet heads guarantee longevity and precision. Furthermore, the hinges are fully serviceable, allowing for maintenance or deep cleaning.
